Condition of Barbus sclateri from semi-arid aquatic systems: effects of habitat quality disturbances
نویسندگان
چکیده
This study investigated the relationships between fish condition and environmental variables in Barbus sclateri from semi-arid freshwater ecosystems in the south-eastern Iberian Peninsula. Two main habitats were studied: semi-arid streams characterized by strong seasonal fluctuations in flow level (droughts and floods) and reservoirs (artificial ecosystems characterised by waters of high conductivity). The mass–length relationships were used to test differences in fish condition between nine stream populations and five reservoir populations of B. sclateri from the Segura River basin. The relationships between seven ecosystem variables (conductivity, oxygen concentration, water temperature, pH, seasonal water flow, submerged vegetation and sub-basin location) and fish condition were analysed. The ecological variables that accounted for most of the variation in fish condition were seasonal water fluctuation and water conductivity. The condition of B. sclateri populations may be a good indicator of fish habitat quality in Mediterranean semi-arid freshwater ecosystems and should be considered when such populations are subjected to sports fishing regulations, recovery plans or any other management programme. # 2003 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles

Assessing Impact of Anthropogenic Disturbances on Forage Production in Arid and Semiarid Rangelands
Forage is one of the main products of rangeland ecosystems, which is threatened by different anthropogenic disturbances. This study was conducted to assess the impact of urbanization, rural development, agriculture extension, road construction and industry on forage production in an arid and semiarid rangeland using InVEST habitat quality model in spring 2018. In 14 rangeland types, thirty 2×1m...
متن کاملHabitat suitability index of Barbus cyri (Heckel, 1843) in Tootkabon River, the South Caspian Sea basin, Iran
Knowledge of habitat requirements of aquatic animals plays an important role in fisheries and protection programs of aquatic ecosystems. Hence, this study was conducted to investigate the suitability indexes of habitat use and habitat suitability index (HSI) of Barbus cyri in its distribution range in Tootkabon River. A number of environmental variables, including elevation, water depth, river ...
متن کاملHabitat associations of a semi-arid fish community in a karst spring-fed stream
Karst spring systems provide permanent water sources in semi-arid to arid environments, supporting a diverse aquatic community. Numerous karst streams in the Edwards Plateau and Trans-Pecos regions of Texas support two distinct fish assemblages, spring-associated species and riverine species. Previous studies have identified constant water temperature as the segregating factor but have lacked t...
متن کاملAmphibian Abundance and Detection Trends During a Large Flood in a Semi-Arid Floodplain Wetland
—Amphibian abundance and occupancy are often reduced in regulated river systems near dams, but comparatively little is known about how they are affected on floodplain wetlands downstream or the effects of actively managed flows. We assessed frog diversity in the Macquarie Marshes, a semi-arid floodplain wetland of conservation significance, identifying environmental variables that might explain...
متن کاملUnderstanding effects of changes in land use, environmental parameters, habitat characteristics on the Great Basin aquatic invertebrates using ecological stoichiometric theory
Land use and land cover change affects the ecological health of aquatic organisms. Such changes have been explained using ecological stoichiometric theories in temperate and humid ecosystems, but not on aquatic organisms in semi-arid watersheds. Semi-arid streams in the Great Basin are characterized by high gradients in water temperature, discharge and land use. This can result in a high variab...
